While certain wooses savanna regions—especially the SHWS: subhumid wooded savanna and to a less extent the SAWS: subarid wooded savanna—yield some timber, resins and other products, these so-called ‘open’ forest or wood-lands and the open woodland are not covered here.

Exept for swamp, riverine and perodically inundated types conditoned by the master pysical factors, moisture, aeration and drainage, the forest mentioned in this discussion lie within thedefinition given in: Forest of highly humid, humid, humid-subhumid types at low and medium and montane elevations in the tropics and hotter subtropics; normally evergrenn to mixed evergreen and deciduous vegetation; tress 60 to 200 feet high, with the crowns normally touching, everlapping and in stratification so as to form a closed or almost closed canopy; soils normally with more litter, raw organic matter and incorporated organic matter and available nitrogen than any of the less densely canopied vegetation communities; climax but with an increasing proportion of secondary vegetation due to exploitation for timber and to ‘shifting’ and ‘sedentary cultivation’.
